Storytelling is a traditional art which Girvan supported from the outset and developed significantly over the years. Children’s storytelling is a specialism within that field. One of the first people to pioneer this art at Girvan was Barbara McDermitt, a noted leader in her discipline, and one well able to adjust the level and content of her material to suit her audience. If there was ever any doubt about this, all that was necessary was to watch the rapt attention on young faces as she enthralled them with gripping tales from many traditions, then to compare that with the boisterous exhilaration in the same youngsters as she enthused them with a good-going humorous yarn, or involved them in an action game to create lifelong memories.
